Starting your own business is no easy feat. Even if you have a billion dollar concept, it’s best to test out your new business concept before saying goodbye to your day job. By testing the waters before taking the plunge, it gives you a chance to make sure that 1) you actually like being your own boss and 2) your business is economically viable.

If you’re currently working for yourself and working your day job, or thinking about starting a business on the side, here are three things to keep in mind to help you succeed while keeping your sanity:

1. Know When to Say “No”

You only have 24 hours in a day, while 12 of those are actually working hours, and if you’re running a side business while also working you day job, your hours are likely booked. Now is not an ideal time to take on even more; now is the time to know when your plate is full and when to say “no.”

Becoming comfortable with the word “no” as well as simple phrases like, “I don’t have the time,” or “I’m too busy to take that on,” will help you say “no” in a way that is still respectful. As someone who is running their own business while still working a day job, you have every right to know and set your own priorities, so don’t feel guilty for not being able to take on even more.

2. Make Time for Yourself

For those who balance running their own business and working a day job, taking some “me” time can feel selfish. For your sanity’s sake, drop this mindset ASAP! Everyone needs a little “me” time every now and then. And taking a little time to be “selfish” can pay off big. Doing something for yourself can help your mind and body reset and prevent you from burning out, which will ultimately help you and your business succeed in the long run.

3. Turn to a Business Coach

Starting your own business isn’t easy, especially if you’re working a day job too—but a business coach can help. A business coach will provide you with the necessary tools, skills and proven systems to move you forward professionally. For someone that has a lot on their plate already, you don’t have time for mistakes. A business coach can help to guide you in the direction of success.
